“I’m going to the Hill, Stan,” Mary said, not taking no for an answer. She didn’t yell or stomp, but she was firm. “I created it. I need to see the test in person, as it’s happening. Not just read about it in a test report next week.”

“You can’t,” Stan replied.

Mary crossed her arms and stood her ground.

“Get me on the Hill, Stan,” she said confidently.

Stan took a deep breath. He looked at the team and then at Mary. “I’ll make a few calls,” he said reluctantly.

Stan turned and walked down the hall to his office.

“So Hydyne,” Roger said turning everyone’s attention back to the drawings of the rocket.

They looked at the Jupiter-C and Explorer 1 drawings.

“I don’t care what they name it as long as it works,” said Pete.

“It will work,” Mary said with pride.

“I know it will.” Asha smiled back.

Suddenly, Stan’s door blew open and he walked quickly down the row of desks. He did not stop to talk.

“What are you doing standing around?” Stan called out as he put his hat on his head. “We have to drive over to the Hill as soon as possible! Let’s go team. And lady!” Stan called out.

“Mary can go?” Baz asked.

“Mary can go,” Stan said quickly. “And we are going right NOW.”

Pete, Roger, Asha, Baz, and Mary all stepped in line behind Stan. He led them out of the North American Aviation building and into a waiting truck. An army officer was in the driver’s seat ready to set off to the rocket testing site.

In an instant, they were on the road.

The drive to the Hill was bumpy and hot. They rode out of the city and away from people, high up into the Simi Hills. All around them was a rocky mountain range with green grass and brown dirt. There was nothing for miles except for birds flying in the air and the odd bug crawling on the ground. It was the perfect place to test rockets.

Rocket testing was dangerous business. The rocket could explode, misfire, or catch fire. There were millions of ways it could end in disaster. And that was the whole point of testing the rockets. It was better to know what didn’t work in a rocket test before learning about a failure during a real rocket launch.

At the Hill, Mary and the others had to stand behind a blast wall for protection from the rocket test. The blast wall was a thick concrete wall taller than any person. If there was a rocket explosion, it would shield anyone standing behind it.

Field workers loaded Mary’s new fuel, Hydyne, into barrels, which were put onto a truck. They drove the chemical out to the test rocket and filled up its tank.
